A MERV rating, which stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value,
is a measurement used to rate the effectiveness of air filters in
removing airborne particles from the air. It was developed by the
American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning
Engineers (ASHRAE) as a standardized way to compare different types
of filters.
The MERV rating scale ranges from 1 to 20, with higher numbers
indicating higher filtration efficiency. The rating takes into
account the filter’s ability to capture particles of various sizes,
ranging from larger contaminants like dust and pollen to smaller
particles like bacteria and viruses.
Here is a general breakdown of MERV ratings and their corresponding
filtration capabilities:
- MERV 1-4: These filters provide minimal filtration. They capture larger particles but are not effective against smaller particles.
- MERV 5-8: These filters are better at capturing smaller particles like mold spores and pet dander.
- MERV 9-12: Filters within this range offer a higher level of filtration, capturing finer particles such as lead dust and fine allergens.
- MERV 13-16: These filters are highly efficient in capturing smaller particles, including bacteria, smoke, and most viruses in great enough quantities that CDC, EPA and ASHRAE all recommend it for indoor air cleaning.
All Air Cleaners are designed to last up to 6 months under normal operating conditions. We recommend in warmer climates to have a fresh filter at the beginning of the cooling season and replace it around August. In cooler climates have a fresh filter at the beginning of the heating season and replace around March.
It depends completely on what type of MERV 13 you are using. The more surface area a filter has the more air can pass over it. A 1" deep MERV 13 is too restrictive and causes problems. Our filter gille air cleaner design offers 3" pleats in a slightly smaller frame allowing filter material to slide past the lip and into a portion of the duct while being held in place by an airtight gasket. This allows our MERV 13 to be less restrictive than standard 1" filters and helps the HVAC system run more efficiently.
Look at the filter you are replacing there is usually a printed size. If there is no size simply measure the outside length and width of the filter.
